NewsPlus

WordPress theme

NewsPlus organises a magazine site around post queries rather than new content types: the bundled WP Post Modules add-on places 10+ post display styles into Elementor pages or text widgets and lets you pull posts by category, tag, specific IDs, custom post type, custom taxonomy or from another site in a multisite network. The theme also has a sponsored-post system with per-post and archive-wide ad labels, per-page sidebar and widget overrides, five archive styles and a layout width range of 800px to 1600px. The vendor last updated it in September 2024, bundling Elementor, a recipe generator and a child theme, with Gutenberg Optimized marked No.

Front pages built from post queries, not new content types

The vendor's feature list puts the post shortcode system at the centre of NewsPlus. Posts can be inserted in more than ten display styles — featured grid, one to four columnar, vertical big list, small list, tiled grid and a material card. Each instance can query by category, tag, selected page or post IDs, custom post type or custom taxonomy. Meta and excerpt can be switched on or off per shortcode, excerpt length is set in characters or words, and ordering covers date, random, title, author and most commented.

Two details widen that beyond a typical magazine loop. The shortcodes are described as usable anywhere inside pages or text widgets, so a sidebar text widget can carry a live post list without editing a template. And the query can pull from another blog in a multisite network, which suits a publisher running separate verticals under one install.

Since version 4.1.0 the home page demos have been rebuilt as layouts from the bundled WP Post Modules add-on rather than the old builder, so the module is the intended way to compose a front page, not an optional extra.

What a sponsored post looks like in the archive

Advertisement spots are standard in magazine themes. NewsPlus separates them from a second, distinct idea: a post can be flagged as a sponsored advertisement, given its own label, and marked in listings.

The feature list describes a custom advertisement label per post plus a global label applied to all ad posts in archives. Read together, that means a reader browsing a category sees which entries are paid placements, while the individual post can carry a label of its own choosing. There is also a custom content background setting per post or page, which gives a sponsored piece a visual frame if you want one.

This is a policy tool as much as a design feature. Disclosure requirements, advertiser agreements and house style all touch how clearly paid content is marked, and having the label live in the theme's own post options keeps it out of editorial copy that a writer might reformat.

Layout controls worth deciding on before you design

The marketplace description treats width as a variable rather than a fixed container: a boxed or stretched layout, with the layout width selectable anywhere between 800px and 1600px. Width choice affects ad inventory, image crops and column counts, so it is closer to a structural decision than a colour tweak.

The same goes for four header layouts — default, three column, full width and slim menu — and five global archive styles: grid, list, classic, full post and material card, with three further grid-style archive templates. A news site that publishes short briefs and long features usually wants those two kinds of content presented differently, so the archive style is worth picking early.

Per-page overrides extend the same thinking. Sidebar placement can be set left, right or none per page through page templates, with a two-sidebar layout available, and header and sidebar widget areas can be assigned per page. A single article can therefore run full width while the section front stays in a sidebar layout. Footer columns are configurable up to six.

Advertising, language and the limits of the compatibility list

Inline ad positions sit before and after main post content, per the feature list, which is where a magazine site usually wants them. The theme also adds its own social sharing counters per post and related posts based on category or tags — both switchable, and each contributing internal links on single posts, which is the connection the vendor draws to its SEO section alongside schema microdata and Yoast SEO support.

For language, the theme ships with a .pot template and sample .po and .mo files, and the vendor lists RTL orientation support and compatibility with WPML, WCML and qTranslate-x. Those are vendor claims about theme readiness. They do not mean a translated site appears on its own, and WPML is a plugin you install and configure separately.

Declared compatibility in the marketplace listing names Elementor, Elementor Pro, Jetpack and WooCommerce 6.x and 7.x. Treat that as the vendor's stated range, not a result from testing on your host.

A 2024 build, Elementor-based, and what that asks of you

The builder situation is settled in the changelog rather than the marketing copy. Version 4.1.0 replaced King Composer with Elementor, stating that King Composer was discontinued on WordPress.org for security reasons. Old pages built in King Composer are described as still working, with Elementor recommended for anything new. If you inherit a site that predates that release, the migration question is real, and the vendor does not promise automatic conversion.

The latest marketplace version recorded at the time of writing is 4.4.0, with the vendor's last update dated 21 September 2024 and a changelog noting testing against WordPress 6.6.2 and Elementor 3.24.3. The listing's software field declares WordPress versions from 6.6.x back to 4.9.x. A theme that has not shipped a release since then may still work perfectly well on newer WordPress, but nothing in the product data confirms it.

One attribute deserves care. Gutenberg Optimized is marked No. That describes the theme's block editor styling, not the availability of the block editor itself, and it is a separate question from the post shortcodes described above.

Package contents: modules, recipes and a child theme

Beyond the modules, the vendor lists a Total Recipe Generator Elementor add-on included with the theme, with the food demo's recipe posts built on it and recipe sample data supplied as XML. For a food section on a magazine site, that is a specific reason to choose NewsPlus over a plain editorial theme; for a pure news build, it is weight you may not use.

Also listed as included: a pre-configured child theme in the main download, sample site data in XML format, a contact page template with form validation, six custom widgets covering recent and popular posts, social icons, categories and a mini portfolio, and a news ticker placeable through theme options or a shortcode. The marketplace's files field records PHP, CSS and JS files, which describes the theme code rather than every bundled plugin.

Whether a demo's layout matches your section structure is worth judging on the live demo, but the modules described above are the parts you would actually be rebuilding a front page with.

Questions & answers

Do I need to buy Elementor Pro to use the post modules?

The vendor lists the premium WP Post Modules Elementor Addon as included with the theme, and separately lists Elementor Pro under compatible plugins. The free Elementor plugin is the stated builder for page layouts; nothing in the description makes Elementor Pro a requirement for the post modules.

Can I place a post list inside a sidebar without a page builder?

According to the vendor's feature list, the post shortcodes can be used anywhere within pages or text widgets, which covers widget areas. The same shortcode system also controls which posts are pulled and how many meta and excerpt details appear.

What happens to pages I already built with King Composer?

Version 4.1.0 of the theme replaced King Composer with Elementor and states that old King Composer pages will still work, while recommending Elementor for anything new. It does not describe an automatic conversion, so existing layouts are worth checking individually.
