Seven portfolio layouts, one caveat about Elementor
The portfolio single-item system is the clearest reason to pick Kalium over a general multipurpose theme. Laborator describes seven distinct layout types, and most of them branch further. Side Portfolio comes in left and right variants, each with or without spacing, plus a right-side multiple-boxes option. Columned covers a boxed layout, a boxed layout with checklist, and full-screen versions with and without checklist. Carousel has two versions, Zig Zag offers a scrollbox or quote treatment, and the remaining types are Fullscreen and Lightbox, the latter handling Photography, YouTube and Vimeo media.
That menu matters because it changes what an individual project page can look like without custom coding. A photographer can publish a full-screen or lightbox piece, a studio can use a columned layout with a checklist for scope, and a designer can assemble a zig-zag page with pull quotes. The seventh type is WPBakery Page Builder itself, which lets you construct a portfolio layout from scratch.
The caveat is worth knowing before you commit. Laborator states that the prebuilt Kalium websites are made with WPBakery, and that Elementor can be used but not to edit existing content. In practice, choose WPBakery if you want to reshape the imported demos. Elementor appears in the compatibility list, so new Elementor-built pages are an option, but the starter sites you import stay WPBakery territory.
What the 19+ Laborator widgets let you assemble
Beyond the standard page-builder elements, the theme ships its own set of WPBakery widgets. The vendor lists more than nineteen, and the mix is aimed at agency and studio pages rather than generic blocks: Team Members, Service Box, Clients, Social Networks, Pricing Table, Portfolio Items, Masonry Portfolio, Dribbble Gallery, Blog Posts, Products Carousel, Scroll Box, Heading, Auto Type, Contact Form, Map, Alert Box, Button, Divider and Like & Share.
The Portfolio Items and Masonry Portfolio widgets are the natural companions to the single-item layouts above, so a portfolio grid and its detail page can come from the same system. Scroll Box and Auto Type are more editorial, and the team, client and pricing widgets cover the sections a studio site usually needs.
Font management as a design control
Kalium groups several font sources in its typography panel. The vendor describes four font sources: Google Fonts with 1,500+ families, Adobe Fonts (formerly Typekit), a Function Pro font family listed by Laborator, and custom font uploads hosted on your own server. Having these in one place means a project can move between a free Google family and a licensed typeface without a separate plugin.
The surrounding controls are where the per-project styling happens. A Custom Skin Generator and a rich theme options panel handle colour and general appearance, and the Custom CSS tab accepts CSS, LESS or SASS with per-screen-size overrides. Different header and sticky menu options, image or text logos, and optional theme borders round out the layout controls.
Shop tooling and the demo-image limit
WooCommerce support goes past styling. Kalium adds an AJAX mini cart and a products carousel widget, and two options are specifically practical for stores that are not ready to sell: Catalog Mode hides prices and Add to Cart buttons, while a Coming Soon page and a Maintenance page handle the pre-launch period.
One limit is stated plainly in the vendor documentation: the sample images in the live preview are for demonstration only and are not included with the purchase. They are replaced with sample images so you can swap in your own. Whatever demo you import, budget time and money for photography and artwork, particularly on a photography or fashion site where the images carry the design.
Multilingual, accessibility and browser claims
Laborator describes Kalium as WPML certified and tested by the WPML team, with RTL language support and .po/.mo files included. The vendor also lists user-contributed translations for Albanian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
