Arcane

WordPress theme

Arcane is a Skywarrior WordPress theme whose marketplace description centres on a competition layer rather than a gaming aesthetic: user-created teams, team wars, and tournaments with matches, ladders and rewards. This article covers what that system asks of a site owner (a BuddyPress and bbPress membership stack, plus the Arcane Types plugin), what the changelog reveals about where maintenance effort went, and how Elementor and the Theme Barracks options panel handle the visual side.

The product is a competition system, not a gaming skin

Read the Skywarrior feature list and the visual styling barely comes up. What the vendor leads with is machinery: a tournament system to create and manage tournaments between teams and users, a team war system for team matches, and user-created teams that members manage themselves. There is also a predefined page layout for clans, which tells you the team pages are a supplied template rather than something you assemble from scratch.

That changes the kind of site Arcane is for. A gaming blog needs a homepage and a post template. Arcane expects a logged-in population that forms teams, gets matched, submits results, and climbs a ladder. The theme descriptions in the same marketplace category often sell page treatments; this one sells an activity loop.

Accounts come before tournaments

The competition features sit on top of a membership stack, and the vendor names it plainly: full BuddyPress support and bbPress readiness, both described as ways to build a community. In practice BuddyPress is where the profiles, groups and member settings live, and bbPress is where the discussion happens around a match or a team.

The changelog makes the connection concrete. A January 2021 entry adds an email notification opt-out, with the changed file sitting inside the BuddyPress member settings templates. A June 2020 entry fixes tabs in the user profile and adds an author link there. Those are member-facing screens, not tournament logic.

So the practical question before a build is whether you want to run a social network alongside the competitions. If you only need leaderboard pages, the theme brings a lot of account surface with it.

What the update log says about where the work went

Arcane's changelog is unusually specific about the tournament layer, and the entries read like corrections to a live sports system rather than cosmetic patching. Across 2020 and 2021 the log records fixes to the ladder challenge counter, duplicate teams in a ladder, a restart problem, reward distribution in the league, and matches being removed when a user is kicked from a ladder. A July 2021 entry adds a five-minute game frequency option.

Platform coverage shows up the same way. A January 2022 entry adds PS5 as a selectable platform option across team and tournament templates. A December 2019 entry adds ascending and descending sorting to a matches block, and an earlier one adds a match carousel.

These entries are evidence that a specific subsystem has been maintained. They are not a test of how the theme behaves on your server, your PHP build or your plugin versions.

Arcane Types is a dependency with its own update order

Several changelog entries put a warning in capital letters: update the Arcane Types plugin, then the theme. The plugin is described as the custom post-type layer, and the notes have at points pointed to its zip inside the theme package.

That is worth knowing before you plan a maintenance routine. Arcane's team, match and tournament records live in registered content types, so the plugin and the theme travel together. Version 3 of the theme, released in December 2020, was described as a full restyle and refactoring, and a child theme fix followed in February 2021.

Treat the pairing as a single unit when you update. The vendor's instruction about the order is the documented path; the install sequence itself belongs in the theme's own documentation rather than in a product overview.

Pages are built in Elementor, styling lives in Theme Barracks

The vendor names Elementor as the page builder, and the marketplace compatibility list adds Elementor Pro alongside bbPress 2.6.x, WooCommerce 6.x.x and Bootstrap 4.x. A February 2021 changelog entry notes a shop block added for Elementor, which suggests the shop integration was extended into the builder rather than left to WooCommerce templates alone.

Site-wide appearance sits in a different place. The vendor points to a Theme Barracks options panel covering unlimited colours, custom background uploads, a jQuery page slider toggle, and separate blog, SEO, footer and social media sections. The split is the familiar one: layout and content in Elementor, global values in the options panel.

The marketplace marks Gutenberg Optimized as No. That is a declaration about block-level optimisation, not a statement that the block editor is switched off.

Platform declarations and what the listing excludes

The marketplace attributes observed in November 2026 list WordPress 6.0.x as the software version, a responsive layout at four or more columns, widget-ready areas, high-resolution graphics, and PHP, SCSS and JS files in the package. The vendor item was last updated in November 2022, and the marketplace lists version 3.6.6, whose changelog entry mentions PHP 8 patches and fixes to deprecated functions in an Owl carousel.

Those dates matter when you weigh the theme against a current WordPress install. The 2022 release is the newest documented work; nothing in the listing describes later compatibility testing.

Two exclusions are stated outright by the vendor. UberMenu and LayerSlider are not included and must be purchased separately, so a demo layout that depends on either means an extra licence. Preview imagery is also excluded from the package and is for demonstration only.

Deciding whether Arcane fits

Arcane earns its place when the community itself is the content: members sign up, form teams, challenge rivals, and the site tracks results through tournaments with brackets or ladders. The theme supplies that structure, and the changelog shows the structure has been maintained through 2022.

If your gaming site is closer to editorial — reviews, news, video embeds — the competition framework is dead weight, and the account requirements of BuddyPress add maintenance you will not use. The decision turns on one question: does your audience compete on your site, or just read it?

Questions & answers

Do I need BuddyPress for the team and tournament features?

The vendor lists full BuddyPress support as the community foundation and describes team management as a user-facing activity. Team creation, member profiles and notifications tie into the BuddyPress templates according to the changelog, so plan on running a membership plugin rather than treating it as optional decoration.

Why does the changelog mention updating the Arcane Types plugin first?

Team, match and tournament records depend on custom post types that the Arcane Types plugin registers. Several releases in 2020 and 2021 instruct users to update that plugin before the theme, which indicates the two are versioned together. Follow that order and the theme's own documentation when you update.

Does Arcane include UberMenu and LayerSlider?

No. The vendor states both plugins must be purchased separately. The preview images are also not part of the package.

Anesta

Anesta, by AncoraThemes, is organised around workplace tasks rather than a page style: dashboards for events and news, BuddyPress and bbPress for groups, the Knowledge Base for Documents and FAQs plugin for file sharing, Democracy Poll for internal surveys, and LearnDash for staff courses — which the vendor states is not included in the pack. This article covers what each of those pieces actually requires, where the three-way editing split falls between Elementor, the Theme Options panel and the setting inheritance system, and why the release notes are the place to check plugin versions before you commit.
